Inclusion

The International Community School in Amman, Jordan is an inclusive school that supports the individual learning needs of all children. The school provides a stimulating, supportive and secure environment for all students, including children who are more able, gifted and/or talented as well as those for whom learning presents some challenges. The aim of the Inclusion Department is to work with the children, their parents, their teachers and any external specialists to ensure that each child fulfils their true potential.

Organisation

The Inclusion department is divided into a number of key areas, each of which works closely together, as well as collaborating, where necessary, with our Counselling and Medical teams:

  • Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

  • English as an Additional Language (EAL)

  • Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP) - formerly Able, Gifted and Talented

  • Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy

  • Additional interventions in Numeracy and Literacy

SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

The school supports students with a full range of special educational needs through the inclusion department, including Dyslexia, Down's syndrome, Autism, Dysgraphia, and sensory integration processing difficulties. Our provision is both in class and out of class, provided by a team of over twenty trained staff, one of the largest teams of specialists working in any International School in the world. We design bespoke support programmes for individual needs, as well as working with and advising teachers, and modifying and adapting the curriculum to ensure every child is able to excel. We provide a variety of support levels, and adopt a multimodal approach to support. We also email parents who pay for additional support weekly, providing differentiated homework and an update on the week.

 

EAL (English as an Additional Language)

We have an outstanding EAL (English as an Additional Language) department which offers support both during English-based subjects and throughout the curriculum, but also through pull out classes in order to maximise a student's rate of learning. This large team works across the school in order to provide subject-specific, as well as general, support.

Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP)

We also have a whole-school Accelerated Learning Programme, where students with special abilities, gifts or talents are extended beyond the curriculum, and receive an individual mentor to pursue a passion project, which is then showcased at the end of the year. We are as proud of our provision for the most able learners at ICS as we are of the rest of our Inclusion programme, and are confident that, regardless of ability or need, you can fulfil your potential at ICS.

Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy

We have the best Occupational Therapy, and Speech and Language, centre in Amman, and run sessions within school in specialist facilities.

Additional Interventions in Numeracy and Literacy

In addition, we provide a range of small group interventions outside of the classroom across the Primary school, for any students who may need a short-term input on a specific area of need. We provide small group support in areas such as Numeracy, Phonics, and Motor Skills.

 

Additional Information

We provide diagnostic screening and testing, both for exam access arrangements and for general use. We have strong links with external agencies, who are able to support children to access services throughout Amman.

 

We boast a newly renovated facility, designed to support learners from 3 to 18 in the same space. This includes a relaxing centre, intervention rooms, immersion rooms, sensory rooms, and a variety of specialist equipment and resources for our students. We run lunchtime social clubs and groups across the school, fully furnishing and resourcing spaces for students who want somewhere quieter or more social during their spare time.

Finally, we design Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students who need to achieve specific learning goals or who pay for additional support, and these allow us to monitor the support termly in order to ensure it is of the highest calibre.
