At the International Community School in Amman, Jordan (ICS) we have a range of facilities that cater for the different types of Expressive Arts; this includes the Art facilities, Drama studios, and the Music and dance studios.
The Art facilities at ICS offer a learning environment that is stimulating, pleasant and disciplined. It comprises two inter-connected classrooms with extensive facilities unique to each discipline. It is a vibrant space with large windows flooding the rooms with light and offering students a space to be creative and grow. The two art rooms have plenty of storage space for equipment and paint, drying racks and storage drawers. A-Level students have their own drawers to store their coursework.
Each art room is equipped with drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting, sewing and digital design facilities. They have two digital projectors and smart boards for visual presentations, two white boards, stainless steel tables that can be adjusted in height and easels for still life painting and drawing. There are three display boards in each classroom and three in our corridor to display students’ work continuously throughout the year. “What’s On” board is updated regularly to make students aware of exhibitions and events in the local area and Internationally.
Drama at the ICS boasts a fully functioning and up to date studio theater. We have full lighting and sound facilities that are flexible enough to support a wide range of staging styles, from proscenium to promenade.
The studio style theatre also doubles as the main drama classroom which allows us to be really creative in the work we do in lessons. The school supports the creativity of performance art entirely allowing us to use other parts of the school for performance as and when required.
As well as the studio theatre, ICS has a multi purpose hall that provides the school with options for other performances. We also have a enormous storage facilities for sets and costume and an entirely separate studio that can be used for rehearsals or smaller performances
The Music facilities at ICS consist of two dedicated Music classrooms as well as additional rehearsal spaces. The primary classroom is a large space that can also be used for informal performances. It is a well-resourced space which has a variety of instruments such as typical classroom percussion such as handbells, glockenspiels, maraccas and tambourines to djembe drums. In addition to this there is an electric piano, a drum kit and 12 keyboards. One practice room has an electric piano in where the other has an electric drum kit. It is a well resourced classroom boasting 11 yamaha keyboards, 3 yamaha drum pads, 1 yamaha drum kit, 1 yamaha electric piano, 2 electric guitars, 4 electro-acoustic guitars, 15 ukulele’s and 2 acoustic guitars as well as classroom percussion such as glockenspiels, claves, tambourines and djembe drums. As well as classroom lessons, the secondary music classroom is also used for performances such as key stage 4 recitals.
In addition to the main teaching room in the secondary block, there is also an ensemble rehearsal room which has an acoustic upright piano and a drum kit. This area is used by students during lessons and break times and for piano lessons after school. As well as the Music classrooms and rehearsal spaces, ICS has a multi-purpose hall (MPH) that provides the school with options for other performances. The MPH boasts a PA system with two radio microphones as well as a Steinberg baby grand piano.
